Hunts Point Wastewater Treatment Plant
NYC Deptartment of Environmental Protection
Bronx, NY
2024
The Hunts Point Wastewater Treatment Plant is located on the southern end of Hunts Point in Bronx County, New York. The plant, originally constructed in 1952, is one of the NYC Department of Environmental Protection’s largest wastewater treatment plants, capable of treating a peak flow of 400 million gallons per day (mgd). Unfortunately, the existing anaerobic digester system reached its capacity limits and required expansion and replacement.
The proposed new anaerobic digesters, designed by Brown and Caldwell, sit on a vacant lot next to Barretto Point Park and the NYC waterfront. The 4 (four) digesters will be the most prominent feature of the Hunts Point project, standing at 100 feet tall, on top of a new equipment gallery/pumping facility. For this reason, a contextual and compatible architectural aesthetic was considered essential. Goshow Architects was selected to reconfigure and design the complex to better integrate this huge complex with it’s parklike surroundings.
This is accomplished by sheathing each of the four concrete tanks in a flared metal skin configuration. The equipment gallery/pump station below will be clad in blue-glazed block with a green roof and solar panels. Indirect lighting will provide a gentle night-time glow.
As of this writing (summer 2025) the complex is at 60% construction completion.
